Back to School season has always been my favorite fashion season.
As a kid I adored the smell of new crayons and picking out new Lisa Frank pencils. As a teen I poured through magazines to read about the newest fashion trends. As an adult the euphoric feeling of creating a new fall wardrobe still lives on.
No matter my age, fall will always feel like a new beginning.
Every August I set aside a few hours to take inventory of my closet; I purge the items that no longer fit (donate or sell), trash the items that are worn out, and I take inventory of what is left. From there, I create a shopping list of what is missing.
If you're like me and shopping time is scarce for me then this process can help you save time, money, and it will help create a more sustainable wardrobe. I'm not a fan of capsule wardrobes; I find that it's too restrictive to try and wear the same 15-20 pieces all season, however I think there is something that we can take from the capsule idea- creating a wardrobe that you love enough that you want to wear the pieces.
The Effortless Closet Essentials List: Back to Fall Edition
- Base layer tank/tee in black
- Base layer tank/tee in white
- Shortsleeve lightweight knit top
- Shortsleeve lightweight button up blouse
- Long sleeve button up blouse
- Long sleeve lightweight knit top
- Lightweight jacket
- Basic black dress
- Light wash denim jeans (distressing optional)
- Dark wash denim
- Dress pant
- Belt
- Bootie, heel
- Casual flat shoe
- Small purse
- Large tote
Once you establish a solid wardrobe foundation then you can pop in colorful pieces, unique finds, and layer on jewelry.
Shopping intentionally will allow you to create a sustainable wardrobe that is not only functional but also full of pieces that fit you correctly, work together (my biggest downfall in college was finding pieces on the sales rack that went with nothing in my closet), and are quality pieces that will last for seasons to come.

Amber
